The Merlion Sea Lions Statue To Be Removed

The Merlion sea lion statue, a symbol of Singapore, will be destroyed to make way for the road connecting Sentosa - Brani.

According to Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), October 20 will be the last day that this 37-meter-high icon will greet visitors. However, the demolition date has not been set because the SDC has not yet finalized the construction plan.

SDC CEO Quek Swee Kuan said the company has no plans to move the Merlion statue and that the SDC will find a way to "commemorate" the symbol.

The Merlion sea lion is a legendary creature with a lion's head and a fish, a symbol of Singapore. The Merlion de Sentosa statue was built in 1995 and quickly caught the eye of tourists.

This statue is modeled on the original statue, 8.6 m high, located on the Singapore River, built-in 1972.

It is the only Merlion statue that visitors can enter and explore. Climb 12 floors of the statue, you can admire a panoramic view of Sentosa Island from the mouth of the Merlion.

According to The Strait Times, the replacement of the statue will be a completely new construction, including a two-story walkway system connecting Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) to the island's south beach.

This is the first phase of the Sentosa-Brani construction plan, called Sentosa Sensoryscape. This project was mentioned by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a speech on the occasion of Singapore National Day 2019.

Sentosa Sensoryscape has an investment of SGD 90 million, covering an area of 30,000 m2. Sentosa Island and the Pulau Brani region will be redeveloped into tourist and leisure sites.

SDC says the first phase will be completed by 2022 and that the rest of the entire plan will take 20 to 30 years to complete.
